TODAY’S WORDLE ANSWER #590 — HINTS TO HELP YOU SOLVE IT

The first suggestion is to use one of the top Wordle start words for each game you play. But if you’re looking for more precise clues to today’s Wordle solution, here they are: It contains two of the five vowels. *

  • It has no repeated letters.
  • It contains the three most common letters in the game.

* By vowel, we mean A, E, I, O, U. There are other letters that are sometimes considered to be vowels, depending on how they are used.

Those hints should get you at least some of the way towards finding today’s Wordle answer. If not, then you can read on for a bigger clue; or, if you just want to know the answer, then skip down further for that. OK, it’s time to scroll down for the answer…

So, what is today’s Wordle answer for game #590?

Drumroll please — it’s CRAVE.

Well, I promised to do better today, and I did… marginally. Though in my defense, I was only one letter away from managing today’s Wordle in four, rather than five. In any case, it’s better than yesterday’s six.

I started today’s puzzle with AUDIT, one of the finest Wordle start words. Given that it contains three vowels and a ‘T’ — the fifth most common letter in the Wordle vocabulary — it’s usually a safe option. Today, however, it was a colossal failure, with a WordleBot luck score of only 7%.

This is due to the fact that it only left 455 potential solutions. That’s not ideal when you only have six attempts to get the solution.

Surprisingly, virtually all of Wordle Bot’s proposed start words have improved since then. SLATE yields 30 responses, CARET yields 8, and a slew of them — CRANE, CARTE, TRACE, and CRATE — yield only three.

But, like a fool, I chose AUDIT instead of any of them. So, what was I going to do now? Bring in four new letters and an additional vowel. I played EARNS, which received an even lower 4% luck score from Wordle Bot. Huh.

Nonetheless, that left only 36 plausible solutions – a drop of 92% that felt very fortunate to me.

Next, I needed to rearrange the letters ‘E,’ ‘A,’ and ‘R,’ as well as add two new ones. REACH seemed like a reasonable option… and it was, turning the ‘A’ green and providing me with a yellow ‘C’.

There were only two potential replies, thus it was a coin flip between them. Unfortunately, I was hasty in my search for the other letters and only found one: CRAZE.

In Wordle, playing a ‘Z’ is always a ‘bold’ move because it is the fourth least frequent letter in the game. It was also not in use here.

I rescanned the remaining letters and discovered the ‘V’ that had eluded me previously. Whoops. I entered CRAVE and watched all five characters light up green.

Five and six stars for

A five and a six for my weekly Wordle essays isn’t exactly stellar. Kelly Woo, fortunately, will be returning tomorrow to teach me how it’s done. Wordlers, till next time.

YESTERDAY’S WORDLE ANSWER #589,

Reading this in a later time zone? The Wordle answer for game #589 was FISHY.

Ouch, that was a tough one. Alan Martin here, with my first six-turn Wordle since starting to write this column.

In my defense, I don’t think any of my moves were especially bad, but hey: you be the judge. The average Wordler completed today’s puzzle in under four turns, so I must have done something wrong. Today’s Wordle answer and hints — solution #590, Wordle solutions, wordle game answers, wordle game hints.

I started with one of the finest Wordle start words: AUDIT. A horrible decision today, as just the ‘I’ became yellow and, according to WordleBot, there were a whopping 261 viable solutions left at this point.

Nonetheless, most of WordleBot’s normal selections would provide you with a triple-figure number of alternative solutions. However, SAINT would have left 20, TASER 26, and SLICE 29, indicating that there were some jewels in there.

Given that I needed to shift the ‘I’ and wanted to try additional vowels, I chose PRIME as my next move, which WordleBot rated as having a 21% chance of success. Nothing more was confirmed, and the ‘I’ remained yellow. Still, with only 28 words remaining, the tide was (slowly) changing.

LIONS was my next go, and I finally got the ‘I’ to turn green. The confirmed presence of an ‘S’ ensured there were just four possible answers left according to WordleBot*, so surely I should get it soon. Right?

Wrong. I decided to play SICKY, which infuriatingly wasn’t in WordleBot’s said list of possible answers. Still, I got praised for my “impressive vocabulary,” which is at least something, and now there were only two possible answers left with two turns to play.

HISSY was my next guess.

“You had two words to pick from and you chose the wrong one,” WordleBot cheerily tells me. “That’s a bummer, but you’ve narrowed it down to one possible solution.”

Indeed. After looking at the remaining letters and seeing the ‘H’ and ‘F’ still unplayed, I saw one more move. Thankfully, all the letters turned green. I’m extremely glad the Tom’s Guide Wordle streak didn’t die on my watch.

I’m back tomorrow, and I like to think I’ll do better than a six next time. Come back then and find out…

* They were: FISHY, KISSY, HISSY and SISSY, in case you were wondering.

WORDLE TIPS — HOW TO WIN AT WORDLE

I beg My greatest advice is to use one of the top Wordle start words. I can’t emphasize this enough: it makes a huge impact.

Without one, you’ll be stumbling around in the dark, attempting (and maybe failing) to identify the correct five letters (or less) out of the 26 possibles. However, astute individuals (not me) have done the math and selected the optimal starting words based on both frequency in English and frequency among Wordle replies. So, make advantage of them!

Second, consider combinations, particularly at the beginning and finish. Some alternatives are significantly more prevalent than others; for example, SH, ST, CR, and CH are all widely used.

Vowels obviously need consideration too: not all Wordle answers will contain more than one, but plenty do, and some even have three. A good Wordle start word should have used a couple, but if they don’t feature you might well want to try another one or two on your next go.

Plus, remember the Y — this sometimes acts as a surrogate vowel, and is easy to forget. It also appears at the end of plenty of words.

Finally, try out possibilities. So long as you don’t press ‘Enter’ you can try possible answers to see how they look on screen. Put in likely letters plus any you know are definitely in the word, then mentally change one to the other available options. This technique has worked for me multiple times, and it’s particularly helpful when the word in question is not an obvious one (like FJORD or ISLET).

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT WORDLE?

Wordle officially began in June of that year and celebrated its first birthday on June 19, 2022. (You can see my opinion on the five areas Wordle has to improve if it wants to keep us playing for another year here.)

However, it only gained popularity at the end of the year, then became viral in January when the globe discovered its allure. In fact, it was so popular that The New York Times purchased Wordle in early February for a seven-figure price, and the game is now part of NYT Games.

It may be accessed via the NYT Games website here (opens in new tab) and is completely free. The New York Times and the game’s inventor, Josh Wardle, have both affirmed that it would stay free. Some individuals believe that Wordle has become more difficult after the takeover by the New York Times, although this is not the case.

Wordle is a basic game in which you must predict a five-letter word in six tries. Each time you guess, you’ll be notified which of your chosen letters are in the target word and whether they’re in the correct order.

When a letter is placed correctly, it becomes green. It becomes yellow if it is in the word but in the incorrect position. It becomes gray if it isn’t in the term at all.

There is just one puzzle every day, and everyone completes it. Every day at midnight, it is reset. More information about the game may be found in our What Is Wordle? page. Today’s Wordle answer and hints — solution #590, Wordle solutions, wordle game answers, wordle game hints.
