Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

Run Time: 1 hr 57 min | Genre: Fantasy Musical | Director: Guillermo del Toro, Mark Gustafson

Cast: Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchiois one of the most beautiful adaptations of the classic fairytale. Highlighted by the monster maestro’s love of creatures, Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) crafts an enchanting version of the story, working in tandem with co-director Mark Gustafson (The PJs) to bring this stop-motion masterpiece to life. Like most del Toro projects, Pinocchio may not be suitable for younger audiences as the director enjoys his darker themes and images, even in his most whimsical projects. Expressed through claymation, this rendition of Pinocchio follows the grieving Italian woodcarver Geppetto, voiced by Game of Thrones alum David Bradley, as his wish magically brings to life his wooden marionette. – Yael Tygiel

Do Revenge (2022)

Director: Jennifer Kaytin Robinson | Genre: Teen Comedy | Run Time: 1 hr 58 min

Cast: Camila Mendes, Maya Hawke

This is what teen comedy dreams are made of. Starring Riverdale’s Camila Mendes and Stranger Things scenestealer Maya HawkeDo Revenge revolves around an unlikely friendship between fallen popular girl Drea (Mendes) and new student Eleanor (Hawke). After being wronged by friends and exes, the two of them hatch the perfect plan: to help each other get revenge. With plot twists you won’t see coming, sharp comedy, and a killer soundtrack (not to mention epic cameos by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Sophie Turner), this is a truly generation-defining film among the ranks of Heathers and Mean Girls. – Taylor Gates

The Addams Family

Director: Barry Sonnenfeld | Genre: Comedy | Run Time: 1 hr 40 min

Cast: Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Christina Ricci, Jimmy Workman, and Judith Malina

While so many adaptations of The Addams Family tend to keep the characters animated—understandably so, given the family’s macabre interests—the best iteration of this morbid family brought Morticia, Gomez, Uncle Fester, Wednesday, and Puglsey into the live-action. Barry Sonnenfeld ‘s take focuses on the love and bonds of this twisted family, particularly between brothers Gomez (a delightfully dynamic Raul Julia) and Uncle Fester (an almost unrecognizable Christopher Lloyd). Even though they’re creepy and they’re kooky, The Addams Family is always about family first. Even if they try to maim and kill each other, it’s all out of love for one another. — Ross Bonaime The Best Movies on Netflix Right Now

The Good Nurse (2022)

Director: Tobias Lindholm | Genre: Drama | Run Time: 2 hr 1 min

Cast: Jessica Chastain, Eddie Redmayne, Noah Emmerich, Nnamdi Asomugha, Kim Dickens

Tobias Lindholm‘s haunting The Good Nurse, based on a true story, shows both how monstrous people can be, while also showing the importance of compassion. Jessica Chastain plays Amy Loughren, a nurse who is dealing with a dangerous heart condition, who meets the newest nurse, Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne) and immediately strikes up a friendship with him. When a series of mysterious deaths at the hospital start to raise eyes, Amy believes that Charlie might be behind these deaths and attempts to find out what is really going on. Chastain is excellent as the caring nurse, but Redmayne is shocking as a potential monster waiting to be uncovered. But put together, Chastain and Redmayne play The Good Doctor like a battle between humanity and indifference, in a film that will both get under your skin, while also making the viewer thankful for those who see the best in people.

The Batman (2022)

Director: Matt Reeves | Run Time: 2 hr 56 min

Cast: Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano

We’ve been inundated with different versions of Batman in recent years, with everything from the Snyderverse take to LEGO Batman. But even with plenty of Batman options to choose from, Matt Reeves‘ the Batman still manages to feel like a fresh take on a character we’ve seen adapted an absurd number of times. Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne as Gotham’s emo knight, trying to rid the streets of crime and failing at his goal. Making matters worse are gangster nightclub owner The Penguin (Colin Farrell), and a menace causing mayhem around the city that goes by the name of The Riddler (Paul Dano). Despite how many times we’ve experienced these characters and this city, Reeves’ dark takes on the caped crusader is a captivating one, as we watch Bruce Wayne attempt to become the hero that Gotham needs. — Ross Bonaime

The Bad Guys (2022)

The Bad guys
The Bad guys

Run Time: 1 hr 40 min | Director: Pierre Perifel

Cast: Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Richard Ayoade, and Zazie Beetz

An animated comedy that also doubles as a heist film, which also features some of the most impressive visuals of the year, The Bad Guys is a lovely surprise that stands out among other animated films. The Bad Guys follows Mr. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell), the leader of “The Bad Guys” robbers, who delight in high-stakes thefts. When the gang gets caught, the group faces rehabilitation, and while they mostly shrug it off, Mr. Wolf considers the possibilities of turning good and how that might be as worthwhile as being bad. The Bad Guys has a style to it that is immediately captivating, and it’s hard to not get caught up in the exciting story of these animal criminals trying to see if they can take a break from being bad. — Ross Bonaime
