Jessica Chastain plays Amy Loughren, a nurse who is dealing with a dangerous heart condition, who meets the newest nurse, Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne) and immediately strikes up a friendship with him. When a series of mysterious deaths at the hospital start to raise eyes, Amy believes that Charlie might be behind these deaths and attempts to find out what is really going on. Chastain is excellent as the caring nurse, but Redmayne is shocking as a potential monster waiting to be uncovered. But put together, Chastain and Redmayne play The Good Doctor like a battle between humanity and indifference, in a film that will both get under your skin, while also making the viewer thankful for those who see the best in people.

We’ve been inundated with different versions of Batman in recent years, with everything from the Snyderverse take to LEGO Batman. But even with plenty of Batman options to choose from, Matt Reeves‘ the Batman still manages to feel like a fresh take on a character we’ve seen adapted an absurd number of times. Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne as Gotham’s emo knight, trying to rid the streets of crime and failing at his goal. Making matters worse are gangster nightclub owner The Penguin (Colin Farrell), and a menace causing mayhem around the city that goes by the name of The Riddler (Paul Dano). Despite how many times we’ve experienced these characters and this city, Reeves’ dark takes on the caped crusader is a captivating one, as we watch Bruce Wayne attempt to become the hero that Gotham needs. — Ross Bonaime

An animated comedy that also doubles as a heist film, which also features some of the most impressive visuals of the year, The Bad Guys is a lovely surprise that stands out among other animated films. The Bad Guys follows Mr. Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell), the leader of “The Bad Guys” robbers, who delight in high-stakes thefts. When the gang gets caught, the group faces rehabilitation, and while they mostly shrug it off, Mr. Wolf considers the possibilities of turning good and how that might be as worthwhile as being bad. The Bad Guys has a style to it that is immediately captivating, and it’s hard to not get caught up in the exciting story of these animal criminals trying to see if they can take a break from being bad. — Ross Bonaime
