National Identification Authority (NIDA)
The National Identification Authority (NIDA) is the Authority that is responsible for registration and issuance of National Identification Cards to Tanzanian citizens and Legal residents.
If a person has a valid residency permit and a passport that is valid for at least six months, they are able to apply for an NIDA card.
The NIDA ID is the initial prerequisite for citizens of Tanzania to register a business, and it is also available to legal residents’ dependents who are at least 18 years old. Legal residents can register their businesses using their passports, but for general identification, they need an NIDA ID.

In accordance with the Registration and Identification of Persons Act (Act No. 11 of 1986) Revised Edition 2012, the National Identification Authority (Establishment) was established in 2008 by the National Identification Authority (Establishment) Instrument. Since September 2016, NIDA has been registering and issuing identity cards to eligible non-citizens in the Dar es Salaam region. As of March 6, 2017, the program has officially been expanded to include all eligible non-citizens nationwide. In this regard, NIDA would like to remind everyone who is a legal resident and has been in Tanzania for at least six months as defined by their residence permits as of the date of this notification to take part in the Registration and Identification of Persons exercise as required by law.
