New Applicant NSFAS Application Form 2023: After graduating from high school, undergraduate students in South Africa can receive financial aid through the National Student Financial Assistance Scheme (NSFAS), a government-sponsored program. It is financed by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

The program also manages scholarships like the DHET Disability Bursary, the Funza Lushaka Teacher Bursary, and other bursaries managed by Sector Education and Training Authorities (for students pursuing a teaching qualification) (SETAs).

History

In 1999, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) took the place of the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA).

NSFAS was managed and controlled by TEFSA, a non-profit, from its inception until 2000. In 1999, NSFAS, a statutory organization, replaced TEFSA. The system is supported by local and international donations, as well as more than R30 billion in funding from the Department of Higher Education and Training (in 2018).

Bursaries pay for tuition, housing, food, and travel expenses for “full-time” students, but only tuition fees for “part-time” students.

As of November 20, 2019, 365,922 applications for financial assistance in 2020 have been submitted to NSFAS, 2019, an increase from 278,738 applications in 2018.

The government has committed roughly R80 billion to NSFAS over the next three years, according to Dr. Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.
