THE FORMAT FOR STANDARD FOUR NATIONAL ASSESSMENT

This style of Standard Four National Assessments is based on the Primary School curriculum of standard III to IV announced in 2016 and introduced by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology.

Utilized effectively in 2017 The primary school curriculum of 2016 is more heavily influenced by the Education and Training Policy of 2014, which stresses the competence of learners in all learning faculties.
The format is intended to measure students’ proficiency in Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic at a level that enables them to apply their knowledge to the solution of social, political, economic, and technological problems for personal and national growth. In 2018, this format will take effect.

The revised format identifies six subjects to be taught in Standard III and Standard IV. The curriculum includes Kiswahili, English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Technology, as well as Civic and Moral Education. The revised curriculum for Standard III to IV combines Geography and History to establish the subject of Social Studies.

The Civics subject has been amended by the addition of Moral, resulting in the name Civic and Moral Education. In addition, the subjects of Vocational Studies, Personality, and Sports, which were previously taught in Standard III and Standard IV, will be taught in Standard V. The National Examinations Council will administer six topics while testing Standard Four at the national level: Kiswahili, English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Technology, and Civic and Moral Education. Teachers are urged to instruct students in accordance with the curriculum in order to accomplish the subject-specific objectives.

This format has been designed in accordance with the competencies outlined in the revised curriculum for Standard III and Standard IV in primary schools. The purpose of the format is to instruct teachers and students on the structure of the evaluation paper. However, teachers and students are cautioned against substituting the format for the content. All objectives outlined in the primary school curriculum for grades three and four must be taught and learned properly.

Each subject’s format includes an introduction, general objectives, general competencies, specific competencies, and the structure of the assessment paper. In the attached assessment guidelines, criteria for assessing each general and specific competence, as well as criteria for awarding, are also outlined.

The Examinations Council expresses gratitude to all examination officers and those who contributed to the development of this format.

8 Tips for Getting Good Grades

Pace your study throughout the course of the year. Don’t leave everything until the last minute.
As you revise, take notes. This aids in the learning and retention of important information.

Make a reasonable revision schedule. Set yourself up for failure.
Study in a distraction-free atmosphere. No television, texting, or phone calls are permitted.
In two steps, revise. The first read-through is intended to provide context. Take notes on crucial points during the second read-through.
To assist you remember facts, use reading, writing, and listening. The subject will remain interesting if it is varied.
Test yourself in order to prepare for the exam. This can be done with the help of a study companion.
During revising, take short pauses. Exercise can help you keep your energy levels up.
How to Handle Exam Stress
You must still study in order to earn high results in your tests. This guide will teach you how to maximize your time and study smarter, not harder. The idea is to make your study plan simple and straightforward.

Make your revision schedule as simple as possible. Don’t be tempted to divide each hour into small chunks for each subject you need to study.
Attempt to obtain prior year’s exam papers. These will give you an idea of the types of questions you can expect on the exam. These may be available through your institution or university. Alternatively, prior years’ papers can be purchased directly from the examining boards.
To help you earn high grades, you may choose to read a book on study skills at the start of your course. I recommend Ron Fry’s “How to Study.” It provides excellent advice on how to make the most of your time and will assist you in succeeding in school and university exams.
Exams are intended to assess your knowledge and abilities. However, technique also influences how well you succeed in them. Maintaining attention and calm will allow you to effectively demonstrate the breadth and depth of your expertise.

How to Remain Vigilant During the Revision Period

It’s easy to believe that it doesn’t matter if you’re too busy to eat nutritious meals (i.e. not junk food or constant snacking.) A decent night’s sleep and a well-balanced diet, on the other hand, will help you stay attentive and bright. Eat healthily and exercise regularly during your revision time to assist minimize your stress levels.

How to Create an Effective Study Plan
Three-Step Revision Method
Step 1: Study the course notes and books you are reading for the first time to obtain a thorough understanding of the subject. At this point, understanding overall principles is more crucial than making revising notes.

Step 2: You will return to the subject in a second reading. As you go over your notes, you can highlight noteworthy sentences or scribble down keywords. This method of active learning will help you grasp and remember your subject.

Step 3: As you read, jot down some quick notes to use as an aide memoir. An aide memoir is something that can be referred to a few days before the exam to refresh your recollection on essential points.

Prepare for the Exam Day
Your exam may take place in a room you’ve visited previously, or it may take place somewhere new to you. It is critical to plan ahead of time in any situation. Consider your mode of transportation; nothing is worse than being trapped in traffic on your way to a test. You should perform a practice run a few days ahead of time to see how long the journey takes. Make sure to leave enough time for the journey “just in case” on the day of the exam.

Can You Bring Your Phone Into the Exam Room?
Your teacher will remind you of the exam room restrictions, including what may and cannot be brought into the room. Cell phones (mobile phones) are frequently required to be placed outside the exam room, but this is not always the case. If you’re unsure whether you can bring something into the exam room, find out before the day of the exam. This will keep you from being overly anxious. For example, if you need to bring an asthma medication, the guidelines may require you to notify the examination supervisor.

Check with the supervisor to see what objects are not permitted in the exam room.
Check with the supervisor to see what objects are not permitted in the exam room.

Inside the Exam Room: The Exam

Make sure you have a working computer, plenty of pens and pencils, and a bottle of water, if each is permitted. You can utilize the clock on the wall of the test room to help you pace yourself through the exam. The time allotted to finish an exam is intended to provide enough time for the average student to complete all questions. A gifted student may complete the course in less time, whereas a less gifted student may struggle. Maintaining a consistent work rate throughout the test will give you the best chance of obtaining a pass mark or higher.

Pace Yourself Throughout the Exam

Turn over the exam paper and look at the questions when directed. Don’t be tempted to scan rapidly since you could panic. Read through each question calmly and note any that you believe are very easy or particularly challenging. Allow yourself only five minutes for this.

The remaining exam time should then be divided equally between the amount of questions to be answered. For example, if you have a three-hour paper with five questions, you have half an hour for each question, plus five minutes at the beginning for a read-through and 25 minutes at the end for final checking.

How to Respond to Test Questions
You are free to answer the exam questions in any order you like. Make sure to number the questions appropriately so the examiner knows which one you answered. As the first question, choose one that you believe is relatively simple to answer. This will boost your confidence and allow you to unwind. As you are still pretty fresh, attempt one of the more harder questions next. The remaining issues can then be addressed in any order. Keep an eye on the clock and make sure you move on to the next question as soon as possible, even if you haven’t thoroughly answered each one.

How to Write Test Answers

Each response should be in the form of a mini-essay.

Begin with an introduction paragraph to introduce the topic.
Next, go over the main points of the argument, including the pros and drawbacks.
You might then conclude with a concluding paragraph.
Your response must be written in proper grammar and complete phrases. Spelling is also crucial. Examiners will penalize you if you use text-speak instead of grammatically acceptable English.

If you paced yourself through the exam as planned, you’ll have left enough time after completing the required questions to reread and double-check your answers. Occasionally, you will notice some clear factual inaccuracies or a handful of spelling problems. By allowing enough time to fix mistakes, you can get the necessary extra marks to promote you into a higher grade.
