Vacancy: Engineering Team Leader at Lifewater International

Position: Engineering Team Leader-Tanzania

Supervisor: Sr Director of Engineering (for technical aspects), Country Director (for administrative)

Team: Programs

Location: Shinyanga, Tanzania

Employment Status: Full time, Exempt

Job Overview

The Engineering Team Leader-Tanzania is accountable for spearheading the implementation of Lifewater’s water and sanitation infrastructure strategy in Shinyanga, Tanzania. This involves guiding the engineering and construction planning processes to ensure strict adherence to Lifewater standards. Key responsibilities include:

Engineering planning and design quality

  • Leading Program Engineering teams in the assessment and planning of engineering and construction processes.
  • Reviewing assessment recommendations in line with Lifewater and national/local government standards.
  • Developing/ revising water and sanitation infrastructure drawings, bills of quantities, and procurement lists.
  • Ensuring compliance with Lifewater and government standards during project-wide assessments.

Engineering implementation

  • Supporting country and program teams in procurement processes.
  • Reviewing and approving construction contracts for water and sanitation infrastructure constructions.
  • Coaching and mentoring program Engineering Team in project execution according to approved design.
  • Ensuring quality and timely completion of engineering and construction activities.

Water and sanitation monitoring and sustainability

  • Contributing to discussions on water and sanitation infrastructure sustainability monitoring.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of monitoring plans.
  • Assisting in the implementation of sustainability strategies.

Leadership and Capacity Building

  • Supporting the management of programs engineering operations.
  • Contributing to the development of engineering training resources.
  • Facilitating the VHV program in coordination with Program Managers.
  • Serving as a Subject Matter Expert for engineering, evaluating the effectiveness of installations.
  • Conducting training for Engineering staff on relevant topics.

Proactive Compliance

  • Ensuring compliance with financial and material resource use policies.
  • Supporting adherence to government standards for infrastructure construction.

Networking and Partnership

  • Maintaining effective communication with District/Regional-level actors and participating in WASH sector network meetings.
  • Collaborating with Lifewater/RUWASA field staff on capacity building.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Undertaking tasks assigned by Country Director and Sr Director of Engineering.

Work Experience and Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Adherence to Lifewater’s Vision, Mission, and Values.
  • Passion for Lifewater’s mission of serving vulnerable communities and children.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Hydraulic, Water Resource, or Environmental Engineering.
  • 6+ years of experience in implementing WASH programs, with at least 3 years leading engineering teams.
  • Proficiency with hydraulic modeling using WaterCAD/WaterGEMS/Epanet; and AutoCAD.
  • Proven experience in solar pump system sizing tools, such as Lorent or Grundfos; and knowledge of electromechanical works.
  • Excellent knowledge of current approaches to planning, design, and construction of small-scale and large-scale community and institutions water and sanitation infrastructure.
  • Extensive knowledge of appropriate technology including solar-powered water supply systems, water quality, and WASH industry.
  • Proven ability to work closely and develop strong relationships cross-culturally with others.
  • Regular travel to program areas as needed.
  • Legally eligible to work in Tanzania; no sponsorship will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postgraduate degree in Hydraulic, Water Resource, or Environmental Engineering or in a related field.
  • Experience with mapping with ArcGIS tools.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software such as AutoCAD/ROBOT, SAP, or ETABS.
  • Experience using project management software, such as Asana.

Physical Qualifications:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
