By registering for a tax number with the South African Revenue Service (SARS), you will save time when submitting all of the necessary documents at your job interview.

Employers may register their employees in some cases, particularly if they are new to the job market.

An individual’s tax number is typically found on their payslip or IRP5 form (also known as an employee’s tax certificate, which lists the employer’s/associated employee’s incomes, taxes, and deductions for each year).

If you don’t see your tax number on one of these documents, or if you’re self-employed, you can call SARS at 0800 00 7277 to find out.

Alternatively, you could do the following:

  • Go to the SARS website.
  • Click “Contact Us” in the top menu bar.
  • Click the “Request your Tax ID” button.
  • Fill out the form and select “What Is My Tax Number” as the query type.
  • If SARS was able to verify your credentials, they will send you your tax number.

SARS also provides assistance to unregistered individuals at any of its regional branches across the country. Self-service is also available through the SARS eFiling System.
