Equity Bank Limited (EBL), On 31st December, 2014, Equity Building Society, as it had previously been known as, became Equity Group Holdings Limited, a non-operating holding company, after undergoing a process of restructuring, so as to further meet its objectives. In 1984, Equity Building Society -now the bank arm of the group- was founded, and has recorded various key milestones through the years. In 2004, it converted into a fully-fledged commercial bank.

Job Title: Relationship Managers – Commercial Banking at Equity Bank

Reports to: Senior Manager SME & Corporate Banking

Function level: Assistant Manager

BASIC PURPOSE:

As a Relationship Manager in Commercial Banking, you will play a crucial role in initiating and managing robust client relationships for upper SMEs and corporate customers, contributing to business development. Your focus will be on ensuring effective business growth for both deposits, loan books, and quality portfolio management. The primary objective is to contribute to deposit mobilization, revenue generation, loan book growth, risk management, and overall client satisfaction.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Business Growth
    • Deposit Mobilization:
      • Recruit potential upper SMEs and corporate customers, along with their ecosystems, to secure deposit growth.
      • Devise initiatives to support the deposit mobilization strategy.
    • Growing Loan Portfolio:
      • Onboard new potential upper SME and corporate customers daily, identifying and negotiating business opportunities to recruit customers.
      • Generate, track, and close sales leads and pipelines for maturity.
      • Explore market opportunities and devise strategies for benefits realization.
      • Facilitate the processing of credit applications as per committed TAT.
      • Monitor loan covenants to ensure compliance throughout the loan tenure.
  2. Portfolio Quality Management
    • Monitor the loan book portfolio overall to ensure quality in line with monitoring guidelines.
    • Track delinquent collections to contain migrations and periodically share collection updates with the respective supervisor.
  3. Relationship Management
    • Initiate, develop, and maintain strong business relationships with existing and potential customers on behalf of the bank.
    • Act as the bank’s key contact person for upper SMEs and corporate customers.
    • Explore and convert business opportunities to ensure profitable business from each customer ecosystem.
  4. Capacity Building
    • Nurture and support other staff to ensure they have the necessary skills and support for the effective execution of their roles and efficient customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

The role requires a customer-focused individual with a commitment to keen business acumen.

  • Comprehensive knowledge in both SME and corporate financial solutions.
  • Adequate experience in SME and corporate lending cycles and management.
  • Commendable experience in credit underwriting.
  • Advanced/Expert level in sales, interpersonal, and networking skills.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with various external stakeholders.
  • A detailed understanding of banking industry regulation requirements.
  • Persuasion and negotiation skills.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any business-related field. Master’s degrees and professional certification will be an added advantage.
  • At least 3 years of experience in corporate banking or 5 years of experience in upper SME banking.
